Spanish broadcaster Gol will be broadcasting the upcoming La Liga game between Real Sociedad and Real Betis live on TikTok for the first ever.

The game will be shown in vertical format, in 9:16 dimensions suited for phone screens, and in 4k – with Gol stating that it will be the first football match in a major European league to be broadcast via the platform.

The format will be similar to Sky Sports’ 9:16 broadcast of the German Super Cup between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in August, with Burnley FC Women live-streaming all their home matches on TikTok this season.

Spanish company Mediapro will use a “special device” to capture the 4k footage, with over 30 people working on the production out in San Sebastian. The event will begin at 8.30pm CET on TikTok ahead of a 9pm CET kick off, with fans able to interact with the commentators and take part in the broadcast via the live chat on the app.

Popular TikTok football content creators Nacho Hernáez (@nachohernaez) and Carla Gabián (@carlagabian) will be commentating on the game, which sees Manuel Pellegrini's Betis side head into the game in fifth place, two points ahead of sixth-placed Real Sociedad – making it a decisive fixture for both teams.

La Liga’s director of digital strategy, Alfredo Bermejo, said: “This is one more step for La Liga in the quest to build new audiences and bring football to all viewers.

“This agreement with TikTok confirms the work that La Liga and MEDIAPRO have been carrying out in recent seasons, to continue creating value and innovating in the broadcasting of matches.”
