Chelsea Women have announced tech entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian has joined the club as a minority investor.
Ohanian, who is the husband of American tennis icon Serena Williams, has reportedly bought a stake in the club worth around £20 million and will have a seat on the board.
This comes a year after Chelsea restructured the club’s hierarchy to attract investors, specifically to support women’s football.
Ohanian was Angel City FC’s largest shareholder before the NWSL side was sold in 2024 for just under £200 million. The 42-year-old also founded social media platform Reddit and has an estimated net worth of $150 million.
Speaking on this new venture, he said: “I’ve bet big on women’s sports before, and I’m doing it again. I’m honoured for the chance to help this iconic club become every American’s favourite WSL team and much, much more.”
This move follows an ever-growing trend of big-name investors buying into the women’s game. Natalie Portman co-founded Angel City FC and is one of several high-profile owners heading up the franchise. NFL star Patrick Mahomes co-owns Kansas City Current with his wife, while Michelle Kang’s London City Lionesses have just been promoted to the WSL.
