Roy Keane has long been an iconic but contentious figure in football, and a key moment in his international career is set to be brought to the big screen.
'Saipan', directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D'Sa, will relive one of the most controversial moments in Ireland's footballing history — the infamous feud between Keane and former national team manager, Mick McCarthy.
Turning back the clock to 2002, the film — which is yet to be given a release date — focuses on when their heated relationship reached a boiling point while on a training camp, resulting in Keane's withdrawal from the 2002 World Cup squad the day before the tournament.
The row between the two lived long past that summer and is one that — 23 years on — has never truly been resolved. Keane will be played by Éanna Hardwicke, while McCarthy will be played by Steve Coogan, with the trailer giving a glimpse of what to expect.
As one of the country's greatest-ever player, it felt inevitable that one of Keane's most defining moments would be revisited for all to see. Saipan won't be the first film to have put Keane as a leading character, with the former midfielder being the subject of Rockmount, a 2014 release that focused on his early life and career in Cork, Ireland.
While a release date for Saipan is not yet known, it's reported that it should come out later this year.
