Anthony Martial scored his fourteenth goal of the season for Manchester United last night, and the French forward dedicated his goal to Malian striker Moussa Marega, who was recently racially abused while playing for Porto.
Martial adopted an 'M' position with his hands to show support to the shameful racist abuse he suffered while playing against former club Vitoria Guimaraes in the Superliga, a game in which Marega would go on to score the winning goal in.
Martial cooly slotted past former Liverpool 'keeper Simon Mignolet to rack up his 19th goal contribution in 30 appearances for the Red Devils this season – stats that showcase his increasing importance to United this season.
Last year, Martial spoke out against racism in the game, saying it's not something that can be eradicated quickly, but that shouldn't stop authorities from handing out punishment:
"It's something you can't really eradicate from society. Out there on the pitch, we can't do anything about it per se. As players, we are there among white people, black people, people of all colours.
"The French expression is 'we're all the same'. Bans should be brought about for people who give out this hatred. People go to football stadiums to have a good time and enjoy the game, and there's no place for it. I'm in favour of the love, not the hate."
The supportive gesture to Marega in his celebration was another touch of class from Martial, who now has 3 goals in 4 Europa League games this season. Check out the goal below.
