Chelsea have recalled in-form Charlton loanee Conor Gallagher after his red-hot form in the Championship, with the Blues set to loan the young baller out to a club playing at a higher level of domestic football.

The 19-year-old midfielder is an England U21 international who scored for the Young Lions in a 3-0 victory against Albania. Gallagher has balled out in south London in his first year of senior football in the Championship, having bagged six goals and racked up two assists in 26 league appearances this season.

Chelsea had a break clause in his season-long loan deal that would allow them to bring him back to Stamford Bridge. Gallagher is now training back with his parent club, but is expected to be loaned back out to clubs pushing for promotion from the Championship or those lower down in the Premier League this month.

Charlton Manager Lee Bowyer said: “I’m disappointed. I didn’t see this coming if I’m honest which makes it harder to take. At the end of the day, though, we have to move on.

“He’s been a credit and a pleasure to work with. He’s come in and put his body on the line every single day. He’s scored us goals and helped us win games. For someone so young, he’s a great talent to work with and I wish him all the best for his future. He’s come in, learnt and he’s going back a better player than we received and that’s what our job is - to improve players.
