WNBA rookie Angel Reese has bought a stake in DC Power FC – one of the founding clubs in the new USL Super League launching later this year.

Reese is one of the biggest names in women’s basketball right now, leading Louisiana State University to their first national championship last year and already making waves in her rookie WNBA season with the Chicago Sky. Born and raised in Maryland, DC Power FC is close to home for the basketball star, with the club reportedly starting discussions with Reese when she was still at LSU.

The USL Super League is the newest women’s professional league to join the game, kicking off in August. Rather than being a second division like the men’s USL Championship, the USL Super League adds another top-flight to America’s growing soccer culture.

With a slightly different schedule and format to the NWSL, DC Power FC's inaugural USL season will run in conjunction with clubs across the Atlantic.In a statement, Reese said: "I want to help grow women's sports and elevate female athletes across the board. We're taking over, and I'm honoured to be able to support Power FC and invest in women's soccer in the DMV community.”

In recent years, a number of NBA stars have bought stakes in football clubs, both in America and abroad. From Lebron James and Liverpool to James Harden’s part-ownership in both Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash.

Reese’s new stake in DC Power FC brings the WNBA into the ownership fold, hopefully inspiring even more investment in women’s sports across the board from women athletes themselves.
