Arsenal have had a world record bid in excess of £1 million agreed by Liverpool for forward Olivia Smith.
The deal for the 20-year-old Canada international is subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed, but this marks a huge moment, not just in the Women's Super League, but women’s football globally.
The current world record signing fee belongs to Naomi Girma, who signed with Chelsea earlier this year from San Diego Wave for £900,000.
Last summer, Smith signed with Liverpool from Portuguese side Sporting for a club-record fee of just over £200,000. Just one year later, she’s signed a deal with current Champions League winners, Arsenal, for five times that amount.
Liverpool finished seventh in the WSL last season and no doubt view the sale of Smith as a significant chance to strengthen their squad by reinvesting the transfer fee – with rumours already circulating that Manchester City’s Gareth Taylor will be replacing Matt Beard on the touchline.
In her debut season, Smith scored seven goals in 20 league games for Liverpool, as well as four goals in 18 games for Canada. She will have stiff competition from Arsenal’s already stacked attacking lineup in the form of Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead, Alessia Russo and Stina Blackstenius. But Smith has been touted for big things for a minute now, with her record transfer fee cementing that sentiment firmly.
